A few years ago, the Siberian Huskies became very popular. The cult series Game of Thrones played a significant role in this – people chose this breed because it resembled amateur wolves. Indeed, dog owners did not always take into account that husky are sled dogs and are not quite suitable for the role of cute pets. Townspeople willingly had fluffy blue-eyed puppies, and then, when they grew up in freedom-loving large animals, they gave them up. Husky is still considered one of the most common breeds in stray animal shelters. There are some most important facts about Husky you should know.

Husky will require long walks
They are very active dogs, so they are on the move most of the day. When choosing this breed, consider that the dog will need regular intensive walks – the more often, the better. And by the way, remember that husky are sled dogs, so they like to run very much. You may also have to love running.
The brain of a dog also needs to be trained
Husky needs not only physical exercise but also mental training. So the owner will have to explore new routes often, play, and learn how to overcome obstacles. With regular exercise and moving games, your pet will behave like the most gentle and obedient animal.
Not a hunter or defender
If you need a dog for security, you will have to choose another breed. It is almost useless to use husky for protection, as they have no aggression towards people, and the guarding instinct is minimized. Moreover, trying to unblock this aggression can lead to a disturbance of the dog’s psyche, and, given its size, it can be unsafe for others. As for the hunting instinct, Huskies have a strong hunting instinct, but they hunt exclusively for themselves and do not bring prey.
A great friend for kids
Among other facts about Husky, they can indeed quickly become great companions for children. The Eskimos, who brought this breed out, even had a tradition: after a child was born, a flock of Huskies was driven into the house to warm the baby. However, it would be best if you didn’t let the children go out with this dog on their own. The fact is that hasks are very strong and can break off the leash. In this case, the child can dislocate his shoulder or elbow joint.
Very smart, but stubborn
Husky is challenging to train because they are very independent. The dog is likely to understand what you want him to do very well, but he will only do all the commands if he wants to do it himself. Siberian Huskies don’t think in the same way as they do in training. At the same time, these dogs need a firm and decisive leader beside them who, with their perseverance, can achieve obedience from a wilful pet. It will therefore be complicated for people with weak character to tame these temperamental beasts.
Physical punishment is not the best way to raise this breed of dog. Due to its character, the whip and carrot method does not apply to husky. These dogs are very emotional and have a terrible tolerance for swearing; they can get offended and sit in the corner for a long time. When raising a husky, it is better to praise them more often and reward them for good behavior. A pet will remember this and be a good boy (or girl).
Husky is pretty cunning. They are very good at faking and playing in public. They mostly use all their artistic skills to snatch something delicious. Realizing that by making a “hungry” look, he can get an extra piece, Husky will resort to this method again and again.
If Husky fails to beg for a tasty piece, he will steal it. “Husky” and “thieves” are synonyms. If you leave the food unattended, you can say goodbye to it: the dog will find a way to steal it. And for him, it doesn’t matter what is on the table – a piece of meat or a banana.
Can attack cats and other small animals
An important point: previously, it was only customary to feed sled dogs in winter when they started working in a sled. During the rest of the year, the dogs were allowed out, and they lived on ‘foot food’. So it is in Husky’s head that they have to get their food. This property of the breed brings specific problems to the owners of the dogs. For example, when you see a cat, chicken, and even a hare on its way, the dog will most likely try to catch up with and strangle its prey. It is true that if a puppy has been brought up with a cat or another pet since childhood, he will not hunt them.
Interested in garbage dumps
Husky loves to go through the rubbish and stock it. It’s likely that all the bones and other crap your pet will bring home and hide in all corners and cabinets. There is nothing you can do about it – instinct.
They can’t bark
These dogs do not tend to bark. However, they can be very talkative. Whether joy or outrage, husky starts to whine – just like real wolves from any strong emotions.
There will be a lot of wool in the house
Siberian Huskies are exceptionally clean, they have no saliva, and their wool and skin are odorless. But when you start a husky, be aware that they do have a lot of wool, so it’s better to get a reliable hoover in advance. Lynching takes place twice a year naturally, but the thick undercoat has to be combed. Otherwise, you will get your hair everywhere, even in food.
You have to hide your shoes
The first year is considered the teenage period for Huskies – it is the most challenging time when they gnaw and scratch everything. If you don’t get unique toys or bones, your shoes and other valuables will go along with it. Your puppy can also bite your hands pretty rough during games. In this case, he should be brought up – stop having fun every time he allows himself such pranks.
When you decide to get a dog of this breed, remember that Huskies can’t handle the heat very well. Yes, they can adapt to a hot climate, but they may not feel very well. In summer, it is better to walk with them in the evenings and keep them in the shade and cool during the day. Under no circumstances should you cut or shave your husky: their wool is insulated from heat and moisture.
Inclined to escape
These dogs can be quite a freedom-loving. There have been cases of Huskies jumping over fences, muzzling glasses in the house, and jumping out windows. They learn quite quickly to open doors on their own, as well as to dig holes. Don’t forget that these are very smart animals.
In general, Huskies are charming dogs, very social and friendly. The main thing is to find an approach to them and start studying at an early age. Then your pet will be your best friend. However, if you feel that you can’t devote much time to training and dressing, it’s best to give up the idea of having a husky, because this breed needs training like no other.
